Autosport International 2012

18th January 2012
There’s something for everybody, from F1 to dragsters, touring cars to grass track. There are many stands from firms promoting their manufacturing and technology for the race and performance enthusiast. Add in the racing clubs and displays of classic and modern machinery, memorabilia stalls, the appearance of top drivers being interviewed on stage, the opportunity to go karting and be a passenger in a Caterham.

There was a display of cars celebrating the career of the late Ayrton Senna, but the queue was always massive so I never got to take a look this time. Having said that, at least I did see him racing all those years ago and remember especially the European Grand Prix at Donnington Park in 1993.

The Pistonheads Performance Car show takes place at the same time, and although a separate show all the halls are together so both shows appear as one.

But that still leaves the Live Action Arena, the largest indoor race track in the UK (it occupies just half of one hall, the other half needed for the spectators and the paddock area). The action consisted of several one hour demonstration drives and appearances of stars from the world of motorsport. Jason Plato and Louise Goodman co-presented the action, with Louise getting the upper hand in their head to head trials and racing. Terry Grant is a regular at the event and this year attempted a world record for the number of passengers in a Nissan Juke driven on two wheels – seven including a fat bloke shut in the boot. Shane Lynch for Boyzone is taking part in the British Drifting Championship this year and he also took part in the drifting demo. The Brisca F1 stock cars had an England v Scotland theme, with Scotland winning the first event on the Saturday. With David Coulthard, Alan McNish and Paul DiResta present over the weekend, then perhaps that result could have been expected! Two wheeled sport is less evident, though there was an excellent display from a couple of FMX riders, leaping between two ramps past flamethrowers. The Race2Recovery Paris-Dakar rally prepared vehicle made an appearance. This is to be driven by servicemen who have had limbs amputated and is raising money to help other injured personnel.

A selection of pictures from the event are shown below.
